Hunter Valley Paddlesports Club (HVPC) Rescue Skills Session

Stay safe on the water this summer by learning or practising kayak rescue skills. Covering both self and assisted rescues, this morning session will provide ample opportunity to learn and practice re-entering your kayak in a safe environment.

Participants should have a seaworthy kayak with sealed hatch covers and bulk heads (at least rear bulkhead), fitted with deck lines and preferably with end loops. Preferable the kayak has an electric bilge pump but can get by with hand pump or a bailer (1-2 litre).  A Level 50 PFD in good condition is required, preferably water shoes and close fitting clothing (loose clothing often get caught up/snagged on the kayak when attempting a re-entry).   If participants have a paddle float or rope stirrup they should bring these.

Please arrive by 8:15am to be on the water at 9am.

Bring water, snacks and lunch

PFDs are compulsory

SAFETY RECOMMENDATION

HVPC strongly recommends that all paddlers review the kayak skills training videos shared by NSW Sea Kayak Club, especially the following rescue videos:

  • Assisted Rescue - The assisted rescue is used to help another kayaker re-enter their kayak after a capsize. A good rescue is efficient, with no injuries or damaged equipment.
  • Self Rescue - Self rescue is a method of getting yourself back into the kayak after capsizing.  This is essential if you plan to paddle alone.

If you would like to practice rescue skills during the rec paddle, please speak with the paddle leader on the day.
